How to Structure a House Track (Step-by-Step)

A practical house track arrangement map you can copy into your DAW.

How to Structure a House Track (Step-by-Step)

A strong house track is not just an eight-bar loop repeated for five minutes. Arrangement is how you introduce, remove and return elements so the energy keeps moving.

A proven 5-minute structure

  • Intro: 16–32 bars for DJs and groove setup.
  • First build: 16 bars adding hats, percussion and hooks.
  • Drop 1: 32 bars with full drums, bass and main motif.
  • Breakdown: 16–32 bars removing drums and building emotion.
  • Build 2: 16 bars increasing tension.
  • Drop 2: 32–64 bars with variation.
  • Outro: 16–32 bars for mixing out.

How to escape loop mode

Copy your main loop across five minutes first, then mute elements to create sections. It is easier to remove energy than invent an arrangement from silence. Once the skeleton works, add transitions, fills and automation.

What changes every 8 or 16 bars

  • Add or remove a hat layer.
  • Bring in a percussion loop.
  • Filter the bass or chords.
  • Add a crash, riser, fill or reverse effect.
  • Drop the kick for one beat before a new section.

Arrangement checklist

  1. Can a DJ mix into the intro?
  2. Does the first drop arrive before the listener gets bored?
  3. Does the breakdown remove enough energy?
  4. Does the second drop add something new?
  5. Can the outro be mixed out cleanly?

Every 8 or 16 bars, change one thing. If nothing changes for too long, the listener starts hearing a loop instead of a song.
